Full Review

If Walmart is your preferred place for everyday shopping, the Capital One® Walmart Rewards™ Mastercard® can snag you some serious savings on top of the chain's already low prices. The card is not a slam-dunk for all Walmart fans, though, especially for those who have little interest in online shopping or are seeking a slew of upfront perks. And if Walmart isn't already your preferred place to shop, this card won't make a lot of sense.

Why you want to apply?

①Better rewards

Each Walmart credit card offers the same base rewards, but the Capital One® Walmart Rewards™ Card offers a more in-depth rewards program.

Both cards offer:

• 5% back on purchases at Walmart.com and on the Walmart app (which includes grocery pickup and delivery)

• 2% back on Walmart purchases in stores

• 2% back at Walmart and Murphy USA fuel stations

The Capital One® Walmart Rewards™ Card also offers:

• 2% back on restaurants and travel

• 1% back everywhere else Mastercard is accepted

New applicants for either card can also take advantage of a welcome bonus: Earn unlimited 5% back in Walmart stores when using Walmart Pay for the first 12 months after approval. After the intro offer ends, earn 2% back

More flexible redemption

Cash back is available outside of Walmart, including:

As a statement credit.

At Walmart.com during checkout.

For gift cards.

For booking travel (must redeem via Capital One portal).

There is no minimum redemption requirement, and rewards don’t expire.

Access to digital tools

As with other Capital One credit cards, cardholders can lock or unlock the card easily if it’s lost or misplaced, receive account alerts about things like potential fraud or purchasing errors, and track spending through text alerts.

No annual fees

National averages for annual credit card fees are around $33, making the Walmart card much more affordable in comparison.

Travels well

Since it's a Mastercard, you'll enjoy wide acceptance both at home and abroad. The card's lack of foreign transaction fees combined with the aforementioned travel protections and benefits make it a worthy traveling companion.

Some Drawbacks:

Higher APR rates

Compared to an average 15.18% for traditional credit cards , the Walmart Credit Card is a bad idea for anyone who tends to carry a balance, as their APR well over 20%.

In-store rewards offers are not as good

You can only get 2% cash back on in-store shopping, which is lower than shopping online.

Limited use

If you want a credit card you can use anywhere or one you can rely on for emergencies, the Walmart Rewards Card is not the best option. The Walmart Rewards Card is only good for Walmart purchases.

Shipping fee

Walmart.com itself advertises free shipping, but only on purchases of $35 or more. Other store cards, like the Target REDcard™ Credit Card, offer free shipping to cardholders on all eligible items, no minimum purchase required.

Higher approval requirement

It easier to start building credit through a co-branded option, like the Costco credit card. But you need a credit score of 620 or above to qualify when people want to apply for Walmart cards.

Should you get the Capital One® Walmart Rewards™ Mastercard®?

If you already do the bulk of your shopping at Walmart and you're OK with doing so mainly online, the Capital One® Walmart Rewards™ Mastercard® deserves a place in your wallet. You'll be rewarded not only for Walmart-related purchases, but also in several other helpful everyday categories.

If you don't shop at Walmart, don't live near one, or if another place suits your needs better, consider instead a general cash-back credit card that aligns with your budget.

Walmart Rewards Card Review

Sams Credit Card

The Sam’s Club Credit Card, issued by Synchrony Bank, is a basic store credit card for Sam’s Club members with a less-than-stellar credit profile. The Sam’s Club Credit Card can only be used at Sam’s Club and Walmart stores and doesn’t offer any rewards on purchases, so it’s mainly for borrowers who aren’t likely to qualify for a better credit card that can be used more broadly. If your credit is just fair (if you have a FICO score of 580 to 669) and you shop at Sam’s Club and Walmart frequently, this card can be a worthwhile financing tool, albeit with a steep interest rate.

Big Lots Credit Card

The Big Lots Credit Card is a good choice for frequent Big Lots shoppers who want the flexibility to pay for their purchases over time. If you can handle the deferred-interest financing deals properly, you can save a lot of money and gain the flexibility around paying your credit card bill. Most people, however, will be better off with a cash-back card that works anywhere and earns rewards of some kind. Try the CardCruncher tool to find the right card for you.

Surge Mastercard Credit Card

The Surge Mastercard® is one of the easiest credit cards to get if you have bad credit, but the card's annual and monthly fees may reduce its appeal. If you're considering the Surge Mastercard® to build credit, here's what you need to know before you submit your application.

Menards BIG Credit Card

The card offers different types of rewards from cash back to in-store financing making it a very valuable tool especially if you tend to do a lot of home improvement.

Stein Mart Credit Card

The Stein Mart Platinum Mastercard® offers additional savings on items that fly off the rack at the discount retailer's store. The card, issued by Synchrony Bank, earns rewards at the retailer online and in-store and everywhere that Mastercard is accepted. It also offers perks such as exclusive savings events, birthday surprises and the chance to earn even more rewards with Elite status. The card's annual fee is $0.
